Product & Compatibility
What size Moka Express should I buy?
It depends on how many people you're making coffee for. The 1 cup is perfect for a solo espresso, the 3 cup is ideal for couples, the 6 cup suits families, and the 9 or 12 cup is great for entertaining or office use. Note that Moka Express "cups" are espresso-sized, not mug-sized.
Does the Bialetti Moka Express work on induction hobs?
The classic aluminium Moka Express is not induction compatible. However, you can opt for the Bialetti Moka Induction, which is made from stainless steel and fully induction compatible. You can recognise the Bialetti Moka Induction versions by their round base.
What type of coffee should I use?
Use a medium to fine grind — similar to espresso grind but slightly coarser. Avoid using espresso machine grind as it can clog the filter. Bialetti's own ground coffee is designed specifically for stovetop brewers.
Using the Moka Express
How do I use the Bialetti Moka Express?
Fill the base with cold water up to the safety valve, fill the filter basket with ground coffee (do not tamp), assemble, and heat on medium. Remove from heat as soon as you hear a gurgling sound — your coffee is ready.
Should I tamp the coffee like an espresso machine?
No — never tamp the coffee in a Moka Express. Simply level it off. Tamping increases pressure and can cause the safety valve to release or affect the flavour.
Can I make milk-based drinks like lattes or cappuccinos?
Yes — the Moka Express produces a strong, concentrated coffee similar to espresso. You can steam or froth milk separately and combine it to make lattes, cappuccinos, or flat whites at home. Do not add milk to the base of the Moka Express, only add water.
Care & Maintenance
How do I clean the Bialetti Moka Express?
Rinse with warm water after each use — no soap needed, as it strips the seasoning built up over time. The Moka Express is dishwasher-safe but it is not recommended to put it in the dishwasher. Dry thoroughly before storing.
How long will a Bialetti Moka Express last?
With proper care, decades. The Moka Express has been made since 1933 and is famously durable. The aluminium body does not wear out — only the gasket and filter plate need occasional replacement.
